Abigail Wilson - Greencastle Middle School

Abigail Wilson is a Greencastle School Corporation student. She was a finalist in the 2008 Putnam County Community Foundation's National Philanthropy Week essay contest. As finalist Abigail was able to award $50 to a Putnam County charity of her choice. Congratulations Abigail! Below is her essay.

The Philanthropist I Admire

Philanthropists are very good people who do good things. The definition for philanthropy in the Webster's Dictionary is, the desire to help mankind as indicated by acts of charity. My definition is, acts of kindness towards other people and nature to show you care. I don't think Philanthropy is just giving money. I think it is also helping people and nature. Yes, you can be a philanthropist by helping take care of plants and animals too.

The philanthropist I am writing about is Becky Greenlee. Becky is such an amazing person who loves to take care of others and has blessed so many of our lives. The reason why I chose to write my essay on Becky is because she has been such a blessing to me and my family. When I was in elementary school I saw Becky as my friend and could come to her with anything as I can still do now.

Some things Becky has done are the following. When Becky was five years old she saw a show on television about children in Africa who were in need of food and shelter. She saw how uncared and unnourished they were and broke out in tears. When her parents walked in she was sobbing and wanted to help immensely. She then realized she has a huge heart and wanted to show her love towards others. In school she was always friends with the unloved outcasts. She stuck up for those who were being picked on and did all she could at her age to help people. Her parents helped her by driving children to and from school who had no transportation. When she was in college Becky made good friends with the janitor of her dorm who had a poor family. She took them shopping to purchase what was needed for the family. She worked at a youth shelter in Bloomington, Indiana. Becky also volunteered at a battered woman's shelter and many other groups and facilities. A quote of Becky's is, "I like to do my giving personally and to build relationships with people in need."

Becky is a counselor at Deer Meadow Elementary. She has fostered three children and adopted two boys into her home. Becky goes around town and helps take care of animals that have been neglected or the owners just can't afford to take care of them. She has taken animals into her home too. When she knows there is someone in need of help, she is there. Becky provides the attire for athletes whose family can't afford it. She prays that God will open doors to show where she is needed.

Becky Greenlee is a true Philanthropist who I love, know, and admire.
