Humane Society of Putnam County Endowment
Year Founded Founder Barbara Lane Purpose of Fund History of Fund The idea for the HSPC began at a Greencastle City Council meeting. Between the years 1988-1993, funds for a shelter were raised by rummage sales, grants, and in-kind donations. In 1993, they were able to lease land from the county for $1.00 per year for 100 years. Graber Post Mennonites built the shelter in the summer & fall. The shelter opened in 1993. If it were not for many generous donations, it would have cost the county over $500,000.00 to build the facility. No tax money was involved in building the shelter. There were 27 dog runs, a quarantine area, a large cat room, laundry room, examining room, and lobby. In 1995 the shelter was closed by the county due to hazardous waste violations. However, it was reopened the next year by the request of the Putnam County commissioners and council.
