Judge Sally H. Gray Endowment Fund

Sally Gray

Year Founded
1995

Purpose of Fund
On December 11, 1995, the honorable Sally H. Gray, established a fund at the Community Foundation to support substance abuse treatment programs in Putnam County. As a retired Putnam County Court Judge, Sally knew from personal experience the devastating effects of drug and alcohol abuse on both individuals and their families. As a former economics professor, she also was aware of the negative effects of both drug and alcohol abuse on local communities and their economies. Should the Court Substance Abuse Treatment Program no longer exist, the fund will support the Putnam County Museum.

History of Fund
Born October 6, 1933, in Kirkwood, Missouri, located just outside of St. Louis, Sally Gray grew up with a twin sister and an older brother. After graduating from Kirkwood High School in 1951, Sally graduated in 1955 from Ohio University with a major in Fine Arts. She earned her Masters in Economics from Syracuse University in 1958, and taught economics at Little Rock University between the years of 1958-1962, at Ohio University between the years of 1962-1965, and at DePauw University, beginning in 1965. Sally returned to school at Indiana University, Indianapolis, and earned a law degree in 1979. After working as an attorney in Vigo County, Sally ran for Putnam County Court Judge in 1980. She served three terms over sixteen years, retiring from the bench in December 1996.
