Lyon Family Scholarship Fund

Robert Lyon

Year Founded

2003

Purpose of Fund

The primary purpose of the Fund shall be to provide educational financial support to a student(s).

History of Fund

Robert H. Lyon had a love for mankind. "I am particularly interested in youth." Lyon has five children and is involved with the Greater Chicago YMCA and Sunshine Gospel Ministry. He is committed to sending disadvantaged children to summer camps and has employed inner city youth in his offices.

Lyon also had a love of Putnam County. He grew up in Greencastle and graduated from Greencastle High School.

Although his home was in Chicago where he is President and Chief Investment Officer of ICAP (Institutional Capital Corporation), Lyon had fond memories of growing up on Bloomington Street.

Lyon's family placed a strong emphasis on education. His great grandfather was superintendent of schools in the late 1800's and both his mother and father taught school in Putnam County. His cousin, Vickie Parker still teaches in the community. Mr. Lyon also established the Lyon Family Scholarship Fund at the Putnam County Community Foundation.

Lyon envisioned the scholarship fund increasing the educational attainment and per capita income of Putnam County residents. Beginning in 2004, scholarships will be awarded to Putnam County residents who wish to increase their marketability in Putnam County by furthering their education at vocational schools and community colleges, as well as traditional universities. Lyon encouraged citizens to develop skills for the 21 st century, such as communications networking, graphic arts, health care, and electronic engines. The Lyon Family Scholarships will provide generous, renewable scholarships (up to $10,000 annually) to encourage people who might not have otherwise considered the possibility of pursuing higher education.
