History of Fund

Mary M. Moore became familiar with the University of Indianapolis (known as Indiana Central College at the time) as a child, when she attended church camp on the school’s campus.   After her graduation from Brazil High School in 1946, this experience led her to become the first member of her family to venture off to college.

Mary was encouraged by her family to further her education, and tuition at the Indiana Central College (which became the University of Indianapolis) in 1946 was only $100 for the semester.  Unfortunately, Mary developed viral pneumonia in the spring of her sophomore year.  After she recovered, Mary worked for a couple of years, and then earned a degree in elementary education in 1958 from Indiana State University.  Ms. Moore taught school for 30 years, retiring in 1983.

Mary Moore is active and involved in the community, serving her church, the Clay County Historical Society, and the Clay County Museum.  She also is an adult tutor.
